From the Founder
Gritty & Gorgeous was born in a cabinet maker's shop.
For much of my adult life, I've built kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, and custom woodworking projects. In that world, craftsmanship matters.
Good materials matter.
Attention to detail matters.
And shortcuts always show up in the finished product.
Always.
After years of working with wood, dust, solvents, repeated hand washing, and dry air, my skin was a mess. Dry. Itchy. Rough. Sometimes it even cracked and bled.
Some of my skin could have been mistaken for sun-baked corn cobs.
So I did what most people do. I started buying skincare products.
I tried inexpensive products. I tried expensive products. Some felt good for a while. Some smelled nice. Some made impressive promises.
But none of them seemed to solve the problem.
As a craftsman, that bothered me.
When something doesn't work in my shop, I don't complain about it. I figure out why, and I fix it.
So I started reading labels.
I looked up ingredients.
It didn't take a genius to spot a pattern.
Label after label contained lots of water and synthetic fillers that had a background of industrial uses long before they became skincare ingredients.
I thought there must be a better way.
But this line was particularly challenging. I found I could make better products. That is a pretty low bar. But these products have to do double duty. They have to protect soft, silky skin from daily environmental damage AND they have to help improve skin health and texture. Two very different assignments. Most store brands attempt one or the other. Both in one product is challenging.
So, I started with basics.
No greasy afterfeel. No one likes feeling greasy.
Velvety smooth, totally feminine finish. Nothing sticky.
Contributes to skin health. Every ingredient has to earn its place. It must provide functional support. It cannot be just a label dressing.
And I could not overlook fragrance, which gave my wife veto power over whatever I crafted. She has the “fragrance nose”. She picks up the subtleties my snoz misses. I don’t care how hard I tried to craft the perfect product, if she didn’t like the way the fragrance settled, it was back to the drawing board.
I tested.
I refined.
I adjusted.
I learned.
And eventually I created products that made a dramatic difference in my own skin even though I smelled a little sweet.
That's how Gritty & Gorgeous began.
Today, every product I make follows the same principles that guided me in my woodshop for decades.
No shortcuts.
No water.
No fillers.
And I simply refuse to put synthetic ingredients in my products. They're terrific for automobiles, but I don't believe they belong on your skin.
I'm not trying to be an influencer, so I really don't care what the latest trend is. What I care about is whether an ingredient earns its place in my bottles.
If it works, it stays in my bottles.
If it doesn't, it stays out.
It ain't rocket surgery.
Every product I make is designed to support healthy, resilient skin using concentrated botanical ingredients chosen for one reason:
Because they work. Even the essential oils that fragrance my products carry their weight and help improve skin health, or they don't make the cut.
Every drop of every ingredient I use has a task that it does exceptionally well, or it remains on the shelf.
That's the philosophy behind Gritty & Gorgeous.
A craftsman's approach to skincare for women who work hard, play hard, and still want their skin to always be gorgeous, whether it dressed in hard-work attire, or her favorite little black dress.
